Service
Cleaning, so the run drains again.
Packed leaves, grit, shingle granules and nesting material cleared out of the trough and the downspouts.
The problem
It is the downspout throat that usually finishes the job.
Leaves in the trough are only half the story. What actually stops the water is the plug that forms where the gutter drops into the downspout. Once that is closed, the run holds water along its whole length whether or not the rest of it looks clear from the ground.
The tell-tale is simple. If a downspout stays dry during a real rain while water is pouring over the front edge of the gutter twenty feet away, the outlet is blocked.

The fix

Trough out, downspouts flushed, drainage checked.
The trough gets cleared and the downspouts get cleared, because doing one without the other just moves the problem. Then the run gets checked for the things a clean-out reveals: a bay that holds water, a hanger that has let go, a joint that has been weeping all along.
If the clean-out turns up something that needs repair, you get told. Whether you have it done is your call.

FAQ
Cleaning questions
How often should gutters be cleaned?
It depends entirely on what is over them. A house with nothing overhanging can go a long time. A house under maples or pines fills every year, sometimes twice.
Do you clear the downspouts too?
Yes, and that is the important half. A clean trough draining into a blocked outlet is still a blocked gutter.
Can you clean gutter on a shop or barn?
Yes. Long ag eaves are part of the normal work here.
Would leaf guard save me doing this?
It cuts it down a lot under trees. It does not remove the job completely. There is a full page on leaf guard if you want to weigh it up.
